Welcome on piarc.org!

PIARC (World Road Association), founded in 1909 and comprising 125 member governments from all over the world, is the global forum for exchange of knowledge and experience on roads, road transport policies and practices. With consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, the Association is contributing to a stable and sustainable global development of the road and transport sector.

2C - Earthworks Project

The Booklet 2C, downloadable on this page, covers the earthworks studies and project.

This Part of the Manual deals with the different phases of the earthworks project, from the design to the construction of earth-structures. We have chosen to refer to major linear, rail or road infrastructure projects, which require more complete and in-depth studies.

Economic and environmental issues are the main guiding thread in this Booklet. Optimization of the earthworks project is carried out for each study phase.

Infrastructure design phase : the Manual highlights the important influence of earthworks on the economic and environmental choice of the project, defining the road alignment and the longitudinal profile of the infrastructure.

Project phase : The purpose of the earthworks project is to determine the geometric and technical characteristics of the earth-structures, based on studies, including:

-Studies defining the geometric data of the project, leading to the establishment of execution plans.

-Geological and geotechnical studies based on field surveys.

-Sewerage and drainage studies associated with earthworks.

Environmental studies and the resulting impact assessment are to be carried out in this phase.

Geotechnical studies are of major importance to the success of the project, for the identification and optimal reuse of site materials, the geotechnical design of the earth-structures - based on the stability and deformation studies - and of structural layers and pavement platforms.

The optimization of the earthworks project is essentially based on two correlated studies, earth-moving and works planning. These studies determine the strategic issues of works realization.
